Managing Director Welcome

Welcome to the Society for Postdoctoral Scholars (SPS), a voluntary organization formed by postdoctoral fellows. It is a fully certified society of the College of Graduate and Postgraduate Studies (CGPS). The mandate of SPS is to provide opportunities for networking and collaboration among Postdoctoral Fellows (PDFs) to improve our overall experience at the U of S. The knowledge we gained and skills we developed go down in hard labor in a bid to do more research work, publish papers and writing proposals for project funding, among others. Unbeknown to us, this may not count in reaching the usual ultimate goal, securing a faculty position. A Postdoctoral period is a juncture at which the realities of two trails, academia and industry become obvious, blotting out all our preconceived thoughts, assumptions and fantasies. It is when we realize that there are system parameters that matter more than our sweat. As we traverse this gray zone, come let us do it together because as a group we will not forget to socialize, share our concerns and experiences as well as inspire each other.

At SPS we facilitate communication between PDFs and the College through the Postdoctoral Studies Coordinator. Apart from CGPS, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) is at our service. Some of our concerns can be addressed by CGPS but others are more the mandate of PSAC.

Given the usually short time nature of contracts received by PDFs, we come and go without exploring much about the university and probably the city. SPS brings together all PDFs from different departments and centers by organizing technical sessions and social events.  Come, let us reason together, celebrate our diversity and inspire those coming our way in the short time that we have.

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together ………………African Proverb
